Bengals take WR Cody Core in 6th round

Matt Bush / USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Bengals have selected wide receiver Cody Core out of Ole Miss 199th overall in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He'll likely feature on special teams for the Bengals. He's the second wide receiver selected by the club, after Tyler Boyd was taken in the second round.

Core possesses average straight-line speed for a receiver, running a 4.47 40-yard dash.

Cody Core Bio

Position: WR
School: Ole Miss
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-3
Weight: 205 lbs

Strengths

  • Versatile. Played primarily special teams and defensive back in his first two college seasons before moving to receiver as a junior.
  • Size. Ideal height and weight for an NFL receiver. Quality run blocker on the edge.
  • Big play ability. Averaged 17.4 yards per catch in 2015.

Weaknesses

  • Forgotten man. Teammate Laquon Treadwell dictated opposing coverages to give more room for Core. Played against lesser cornerbacks in mostly single coverage.
  • Below average speed. Doesn't possess quickness or burst expected by NFL receivers. Struggled to create separation when facing quality defensive backs.
  • Poor route runner. Slow getting in and out of breaks, sloppy routes, easy to predict.
