Texans GM: We probably could've received pick for Hoyer

The Houston Texans unceremoniously released Brian Hoyer on April 17, but the club believes they could've received a draft pick for him in a trade.

Hoyer started nine games for the Texans last season, completing 60.7 percent of his passes for 2,606 yards and 19 touchdowns against seven interceptions. However, Hoyer submitted an awful performance during the team's wild-card round loss against the Kansas City Chiefs, throwing no touchdowns, four interceptions, and completed only 44 percent of his passes.

The Texans signed Brock Osweiler to a four-year, $72-million contract on the first day of free agency and Hoyer was rendered expendable.

"I think I probably could have gotten a pick, honestly, but I think in fairness to him - this was an organizational decision," Smith said via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "Everything that we do and when we do it, we have multiple conversations about it and while there may have been some value there for us organizationally, we just felt like it was the right time to do it, and not just for him but for us as well. It was just the right time we felt organizationally and so we made the move."

It's possible the Texans could've recouped some value for Hoyer, but the team enters the draft with their starting quarterback already entrenched. Hoyer remains a free agent, and is one of the best quarterbacks left on the market.
