Broncos' Elway: Signing Brian Hoyer a 'real possibility'

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway acknowledged Thursday that the team has interest in signing free-agent quarterback Brian Hoyer, though it doesn't sound like a deal is on the horizon.

"We had a good visit, but he's got another trip lined up. It's a possibility," Elway said, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "He's a good football player. We wanted to have him in, meet him, and get to know him a little bit. But nothing to report there."

Hoyer, who was released by the Houston Texans on Sunday, has reportedly attracted interest from five or six teams. If signed by the Broncos, he would compete with Mark Sanchez for the starting job.

"He brings competition," Elway said. "We're going to have someone compete with Mark and he's one of the possibilities. He had a real good year in Houston last year, so he's a guy who's a real possibility with us."

Elway appears comfortable entering training camp with Sanchez as the starter, though.

"We're happy with Mark," he said. "Mark's excited about being here. We're excited about having him."
