NFL Game Summary - Tennessee at Washington

Landover, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Kai Forbath's fourth field goal of the contest, a 22-yard try, split the uprights as time expired and gave Washington a 19-17 decision over Tennessee in Week 7 action.

Colt McCoy took over after halftime and led his club on the winning drive, completing 11-of-12 passes overall for 128 yards and one score to Pierre Garcon for the Redskins (2-5), who put the brakes on a four-game skid.

"He's had to learn like all back-up quarterbacks have had to do. But he's very, very smart," Washington head coach Jay Gruden said of his backup. "He's been in this system before -- a West Coast-type system -- so he's familiar with a lot of the pass concepts. We figured if his number was called, he'd be ready to go."

Kirk Cousins was under center for the first half, racking up 139 yards and an interception on 10-of-16 attempts. Garcon finished with 87 yards on five receptions, while Alfred Morris totaled 54 yards on 18 carries.

Charlie Whitehurst ended up 17-of-26 for 160 yards, two touchdowns and one pick for the Titans (2-5), who have lost five of six. Kendall Wright and Derek Hagan posted a TD grab apiece and Bishop Sankey was held to 56 yards on 16 carries.

Tennessee needed just eight plays to traverse 80 yards, getting 38 of those on a Whitehurst pass to Hagan for the go-ahead touchdown, and went ahead 17-16 just shy of the middle point of the fourth quarter.

Both sides exchanged punts after going three-and-out, then the hosts received the ball on their own 20 with 3:14 remaining.

DeSean Jackson made a leaping grab and fell on his back along the right sideline at the Titans' 11 on a 2nd-and-7 from the 47 with 1:07 to go, but offsetting penalties wiped out the play.

Later in the drive, Jason McCourty held up Jackson and Washington had 1st-and- goal from the 7-yard line, then a defensive offsides call pushed the ball to the 3. McCoy took a knee before Forbath -- who wasn't fooled by an attempt to ice him -- connected for the winning score.

"We didn't make enough plays at the end, unfortunately. We shouldn't have come to that position. Offensively, we had the ball back and we had run more time off the clock. We made a mistake and we made enough mistakes all day," said Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt. "It's hard to pin it on that last drive or on anything. We didn't do the job today and that's disappointing."

Forbath's 31-yard field goal capped Washington's opening possession. On the hosts' next touch, Cousins was sacked, coughed up the ball, with Avery Williamson recovering and Tennessee took over on the 15-yard line. Ryan Succop's 36-yarder tied the game after his team moved backwards by three yards.

Forbath was good from 31 yards away midway through the second and the 'Skins led 6-3. Whitehurst and Cousins then exchanged interceptions on back-to-back plays.

Four plays after Wesley Woodyard's pick, Wright slithered his way into the end zone for a 14-yard TD reception and a 10-6 Titans edge.

McCoy was under center to start the second half, and on the hosts' second play from scrimmage, Garcon recorded a 70-yard catch-and-run to put Washington on top 13-10.

"After the interception, we decided to go with Colt," was all Gruden offered on the switch.

With less than a minute to play in the third, Dexter McCluster muffed a punt, and it fell into the hands of Niles Paul at the Titans' 24-yard line. McCoy's pass to the end zone on 3rd-and-5 was tipped away, and Forbath's 27-yard attempt was good early in the fourth for a 16-10 game.
