Report: Ron Francis in line to replace Jim Rutherford as Canes' GM

Apr 26, 12:27 PM

With Jim Rutherford expected to step into a reduced role from the general manager post he's occupied for two decades, Ron Francis appears to be the latest former NHL star to jockey himself into a prominent front-office position.

TSN's Darren Dreger is reporting that Rutherford's move is a torch passing, of sorts.

Rutherford was the architect behind the Hurricanes' 2006 Stanley Cup Championship run, which was captured two years after he traded Francis to the Toronto Maple Leafs, awarding the 23-year pro one final playoff run.

Francis has worked in the Hurricanes' front office since 2011.

The Carolina Hurricanes announced a significant shake up to their front office on Monday, highlighted by Stanley Cup winner Ron Francis replacing general manager Jim Rutherford. There will be other changes to the Hurricanes front office in addition to Francis stepping into the top executive role according to TSN reporter (and former Hurricanes defenseman) Aaron Ward:

Rutherford will remain with the organization as President, however, he described his new role as an advisory one and insisted that "no one will report to me" on several occasions during Monday's press conference.
