EUGENE, Ore. (AP) Their comebacks far from complete, Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay are on the right path.

For Gatlin, it's a journey back from a doping past.

And for Gay, it's a march toward full recovery after hip surgery nearly a year ago.

Gatlin and Gay just might be the best shots at chasing down Usain Bolt at the London Games. They showed they're rounding into top form in the 100-meter final at the U.S. Olympic trials Sunday. Gatlin won in 9.80 seconds, and Gay was second - 0.06 seconds behind.

In other finals:

-LaShawn Merritt cruised to the 400 title. So did Sanya Richards-Ross moments later in the women's race.

-Olympic silver medalist and American record holder Jenn Suhr won the pole vault. She beat Becky Holliday, who has funded her training over the years by working odd jobs as a server and a bagger at the airport.

-Reigning Olympic discus champion Stephanie Brown-Trafton easily earned a spot.

-Marquise Goodwin, a receiver at the University of Texas, won the long jump with a leap of 27 feet, 4 inches.

-Reese Hoffa led a solid cast of shot putters, winning the event with Ryan Whiting and Christian Cantwell also making the team. Cantwell captured silver in 2008.

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) - No matter what happened on the final dive, Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais were already bound for London. Chris Colwill didn't have that security.

With his Olympic hopes on the line and a sliver of a lead, Colwill's final dive of the U.S. Olympic trials men's 3-meter springboard finals Sunday was the highest scoring dive of the entire competition.

Colwill rallied from third place to win the men's 3-meter springboard, while Dumais held off Ipsen in the final round to finish second and reach his fourth Olympics in the event.

IN THE COURTS

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) - Jerry Sandusky's lawyers said Saturday they tried to quit at the start of jury selection in his child sex abuse trial because they weren't given enough time to prepare, raising an argument on the trial's speed that could become the thrust of an appeal.

A day after Sandusky's conviction, his lawyers disclosed they felt too unprepared to adequately defend him because of how quickly the case was brought to trial. Experts have said the seven months between Sandusky's November arrest and trial was fast-paced by Pennsylvania standards.

SOCCER

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - After two hours of clever, often dominating but in the end fruitless play, Italy found the answer against England.

Penalty kicks.

Alessandro Diamanti scored the decisive kick Sunday to send Italy through to the European Championship semifinals with a 4-2 win in the shootout following a 0-0 tie with England.

PRO FOOTBALL

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Former Saints linebacker Scott Fujita, a union leader with a record of criticizing the NFL's player-safety record, sees elements of a ``smear campaign'' in a bounty investigation that has sullied his reputation.

``I'm not saying the NFL is intentionally lying,'' Fujita said in an interview with The Associated Press. ``I've been willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they may have just been working with the information they've been given, even though much of that information was inaccurate and lacked credibility.

``It's their cavalier interpretation of everything that's been way off. They clearly proceeded with a public smear campaign with very little regard for the truth.''

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell could rule on the appeals of Fujita and the other players suspended because of their roles in the bounty program as early as Monday.

BASEBALL

BOSTON (AP) - Kevin Youkilis took off his batting helmet, waved to the crowd and blew a kiss to his adoring fans.

A favorite at Fenway Park for so long, he wanted a final chance to say so long.

The Boston Red Sox traded away the hard-nosed Youkilis on Sunday, sending the three-time All-Star infielder and cash to the Chicago White Sox for utilityman Brent Lillibridge and right-hander Zach Stewart.

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Baltimore Orioles released 49-year-old Jamie Moyer on Saturday, parting ways with the left-hander at his request.

Moyer started the season with Colorado, where he became the oldest pitcher to win a game in the big leagues. He went 2-5 before being designated for assignment by the Rockies on May 30.

Moyer subsequently signed a minor-league contract with Baltimore on June 6.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego Padres bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds, who pitched for five seasons in the major leagues, died Sunday pancreatic cancer. He was 50.

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Konner Wade threw his third straight complete game, Robert Refsnyder homered for the second game in a row and Arizona beat two-time defending national champion South Carolina 5-1 in the opener of the College World Series finals Sunday night.

AUTO RACING

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) - Clint Bowyer raced to his first victory on a road course, and first with Michael Waltrip Racing, holding off Kurt Busch at Sonoma on Sunday.

A caution with four laps remaining set up a final restart and overtime finish, and forced Bowyer to earn the victory. He raced side-by-side with Busch at the green flag, but cleared Busch and pulled away for the win.

Tony Stewart passed Busch on the final lap to claim second, and Busch wound up third.

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) - Fernando Alonso of Ferrari won an incident-filled European Grand Prix on Sunday to become the first driver to win two races this season, while Michael Schumacher earned a first podium finish since his comeback by coming third.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) - Ryan Hunter-Reay passed Scott Dixon with 12 laps to go and held on to win for the second straight week in a wild IndyCar Series race that ended under caution Saturday night.

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (AP) - Nelson Piquet Jr. held the lead on a late restart, then pulled away from the rest of the field Saturday to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America.

PRO BASKETBALL

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Hawks are in talks with Danny Ferry and could be close to reaching an agreement to hire the San Antonio executive as general manager.

In a statement released to The Associated Press on Sunday night, the Hawks confirmed they have ``reached out'' to Ferry, also the former Cleveland general manager.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - General manager Sam Presti dismissed reports that 11-time NBA champion Phil Jackson or former New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy could be the next coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, saying an extension with Scott Brooks is a top priority.

GOLF

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) - Marc Leishman shot an early 8-under 62 and won the Travelers Championship for his first PGA Tour title Sunday when Charley Hoffman blew a two-stroke lead.

WATERLOO, Ontario (AP) - Brittany Lang won the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic for her first LPGA Tour title, birdieing the par-5 18th three straight times in a playoff.

Lang, the first former Duke player to win on the LPGA Tour, missed a birdie try on the hole in regulation, leaving her tied with South Korean players Hee Kyung Seo, Inbee Park and Chella Choi at 16-under 286.

SAINTE-JULIE, Quebec (AP) - Mark Calcavecchia won the Montreal Championship for his second Champions Tour title, matching the course record with an 8-under 64 for a four-stroke victory.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Casey Wittenberg won the Wichita Open for his second Nationwide Tour victory of the season, shooting a 5-under 66 in 100-degree heat for a two-stroke victory over Justin Hicks and Jim Herman.

HORSE RACING

ASCOT, England (AP) - Black Caviar won a thrilling Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot by a short head to extend her unbeaten record to 22 races in her first run outside her native Australia.

The Peter Moody-trained mare went off as the 1-6 favorite but was pressured by 5-1 shot Moonlight Cloud in a tense finish in front of Queen Elizabeth II and around 80,000 fans. Restiadargent finished third.
