Ricky Williams set to retire after 11 seasons

Baltimore Ravens running back Ricky Williams informed the team that he will be retiring, according to Jason La Canfora via twitter. This ends an unconventional 11 seasons in the NFL filled with highs and lows.

Williams saw stardom early in his career, getting selected fifth overall in the 1999 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. He would play three seasons with the Saints before being traded to the Miami Dolphins.

The California native played two seasons with the Dolphins before testing positive for marijuana in his third season, ultimately leading to his early retirement.

In 2005 Williams returned to the Miami Dolphins from retirement. In 2006 Williams once again tested positive for drugs, resulting in a season-long suspension. Instead of sitting out the entire season Williams travelled to Canada and signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL, under agreement that he would return to the Dolphins in 2007.

In his return to the NFL Williams lasted one game before suffering a season-ending injury (torn pectoral muscle). Williams bounced back from the injury, playing three more seasons with the Dolphins.

Williams would finally depart from the Dolphins, signing with the Baltimore Ravens in 2011 to backup running back Ray Rice.

The some-what controversial Ricky Williams finishes his career with 10,009 rushing yards and 66 rushing touchdowns with a 4.1 yards per carry average.
