Looking to bounce back from a dismal start to the 2016 MLS campaign, the Seattle Sounders have signed veteran striker Herculez Gomez.

The former U.S. international had been training with the club after being released by Toronto in early March, and will now join Sigi Schmid's lot ahead of their match with the Montreal Impact on Saturday.

"Herculez is a veteran player who has played in some big games,” Schmid said. “I look forward to his team play, hard-working attitude, and his goal-scoring as an addition to our team."

Gomez will be tasked with bridging the gap between the departed Obafemi Martins and hometown youngster Jordan Morris

The 33-year-old is slated for his second spell with the club, which sits bottom of the Western Conference with a meager two goals scored in three matches, after a loan move in 2003.

A veteran of both the MLS and Mexico's top flight, Gomez has enjoyed success against the Cascadians on both fronts, including a performance for Santos Laguna in the first leg of the 2013 CONCACAF Champions League. Gomez scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory before Santos sent the Sounders packing after the return fixture.

Gomez also scored three times in the two-legged quarterfinals the season before, as Santos outclassed the MLS 7-3 on aggregate.

During a spell in which Gomez played for six Liga MX sides, the Californian-born striker became the first American to lead the Mexican top flight in goals, scoring 10 times in 15 matches for Puebla in 2010.

As per MLS policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
