Report: Dolphins, Matthews discuss potential extension before free agency

Looking to return a strong receiving corps for the 2016 campaign, the Miami Dolphins are reportedly making an effort to keep Rishard Matthews off the open market.

Miami recently reached out to the impending free-agent receiver regarding a new contract, according to Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald.

Matthews, despite missing five games due to injury, is coming off the most productive season of his pro career.

He was one of the Dolphins' most reliable pass-catchers across the 11 games in which he was on the field, hauling in 43 receptions for 662 yards and four touchdowns.

Though the interest on the part of the organization is certainly not surprising, it's unclear whether Matthews would be willing to return to a crowded group of receivers.

A more significant offensive role, and the corresponding contractual figures, would likely be available elsewhere on the free-agent market.

Already feeling the effects of the mammoth deal handed out to Ndamukong Suh this time last year, Miami is among the several teams entering the offseason with little salary-cap flexibility.
