New York Giants linebacker Jon Beason is retiring after nine seasons.

The 31-year-old made the announcement Wednesday as part of an offseason roster restructuring that saw the Giants also part ways with veteran offensive linemen Will Beatty and Geoff Schwartz.

Beason struggled with injuries in recent years, causing him to miss 51 games over the past five seasons. He recently underwent knee surgery and said he would wait to see how his recovery went before deciding whether to continue his playing career.

"I always tried to give my all and be competitive," Beason said in a statement. "I wanted to go out and continue to play at a high level, giving my all. I was able to do that."

Beason was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the first round of the 2007 draft and spent six-plus seasons with the team, making three straight Pro Bowl appearances from 2008-10.

In 93 career games, Beason tallied 705 tackles, four sacks, 10 interceptions, and three forced fumbles.
