The LSU Athletic Hall of Fame Committee unanimously approved a proposal on Monday to erect a statue of the legendary "Pistol" Pete Maravich on campus.

"We are extremely pleased that the Hall of Fame Committee has chosen to honor one of the most influential players in basketball history with a statue on our campus," said LSU athletic director Joe Alleva. "The committee acknowledged that Pete was a very gifted, unique individual whose impact transcended the game and continues to inspire those who love our university."

Details regarding the statue's design and construction will be announced in the coming months.

Maravich is the all-time leading scorer in college basketball history with 3,667 total points. From his sophomore to senior season (1967-1970), he averaged an astounding 44.2 points per game.

He was a three-time first-team All-American, and won the Naismith Award in 1970. He went on to a celebrated Hall of Fame career in the NBA.

Maravich, who wore No. 23 at LSU, died in 1988.
