Browns owner Haslam says he was rebuffed in attempts to contact Manziel

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam tried to reach out to Johnny Manziel in light of the quarterback's recent issues, but failed to get a response, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

"Johnny has not responded to us but we'll do anything we can to help him personally and our thoughts and prayers are with Johnny and his family," Haslam said. "We're not worried about Johnny Manziel the football player, we're worried about Johnny Manziel the person."

Haslam appeared frustrated and emotional about not being able to offer support to Manziel, Rapoport said.

Haslam is believed to have made the final decision to draft Manziel with the 22nd overall pick in 2014, despite some in the Browns organization resisting the move.

Manziel remains on the Browns' roster, but the team essentially announced this week it will release the QB as soon as NFL rules permit.

Manziel was involved in a domestic altercation with ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley that prompted the Browns' statement. He is alleged to have assaulted Crowley and threatened to kill her.

Police say he will not be charged with a crime.

Manziel's agent cut ties with his client Friday, and his father said soon after that he believes his son won't live to see his next birthday if he doesn't get help.

It appears the Browns have tried to offer help, but Manziel apparently isn't interested.
