Juventus confirms season-ending injury for Martin Caceres

Martin Caceres will have to watch Juventus' attempt for a fifth straight Scudetto from a distance after the club announced the versatile defender is slated to miss five months recovering from an Achilles tendon tear.

The club confirmed that Caceres underwent surgery Friday.

The 28-year-old, who was injured during Wednesday's match against Genoa, was carted off in tears in the 63rd minute of a 1-0 victory

As ESPN FC's Ben Gladwell expected Thursday, Caceres now faces a long-term recovery. He'll miss the remaining 15 Serie A matches of the season as Juventus tries to keep pace with table-toppers Napoli, along with The Old Lady's endeavors to make a second consecutive Champions League final.

The rarely used former Barcelona and Sevilla player has only appeared in six league matches this season, as the Uruguayan international finds himself behind a slew of decorated defenders on Massimiliano Allegri's depth chart.
