The 35-year-old put pen to paper on a new contract that will keep him at the Westfalenstadion until 2017, the team announced.

The shot-stopper's new deal ensures Weidenfeller's career at the club will not end at the conclusion of the Bundesliga season, as his previous deal was set to expire during the summer.

"Roman, with his footballing and personal attributes, was and still is an important part of our squad and always displays high standards of professionalism," sports director Michael Zorc said.

"We are very pleased ... we'll be moving forward in the future together."

Weidenfeller featured as Dortmund's top choice for several seasons, but has been a spectator for much of the current one after losing his starting place to Roman Burki.

But Weidenfeller, who joined Dortmund from FC Kaiserslautern in 2002, explained that signing an extension was a no-brainer because of his long relationship with the Bundesliga outfit.

"The allegiance to the team because of my longstanding affiliation with the club (was) the decisive factor in my contract renewal," he said. "After 14 years, I feel at home in Dortmund."
