The Colorado Rapids have acquired defender Mekeil Williams out of Guatemalan side Antigua, the club announced Thursday.

The 25-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international joins the team having recorded over 1,500 minutes of action in Guatemala, scoring one goal.

"Mekeil is a player we have been tracking since Trinidad and Tobago's successful run in the Gold Cup last year," Rapids technical director Paul Bravo said in a statement. "So, when there was an opportunity, we decided to execute a permanent transfer with his club.

"Mekeil is starting to establish himself at international level. He will bring a versatility, athleticism and strong mentality to our backline. We are delighted to welcome him to our club."

Williams will join the team pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 visa. The Rapids kick off their 2016 campaign on Mar. 6 against the San Jose Earthquakes away at Avaya Stadium.
