Naomi Watts named honourary president of non-league Welsh side

Far from the flair and flashbulbs of Bayern Munich and Barcelona, a largely unknown club in northwest Wales is taking the adage "you miss 100 per cent of the shots you don't take" to new levels.

Third-tier non-league Welsh side Glantraeth FC may soon experience an increase in coverage, as the club has named actress Naomi Watts its honourary president.

The Kent-born Aussie veteran of the silver screen spent part of her youth at her grandparents' farm near Malltraeth on Anglesey, where the Welsh Alliance side regularly plays in front of 40 people.

"She spent three years of her childhood here and attended school in Llangefni before becoming a major film star," club secretary Stan Strickland told the BBC North West Wales.

Strickland reached out to Watts' publicist while looking to fill the void left by former honourary president Sir George Meyrick's departure last August, and, surprisingly, the club received a positive response Monday.

"I just thought, ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get,'" Strickland said.

While discussions are ongoing, he added that he hopes the club can use Watts' image and name on promotional items and within the grounds to increase its profile.
