Public would cover two-thirds of $1.2B cost of proposed Las Vegas dome

Public financing would be expected to dish out $780 million for a proposed domed stadium in Las Vegas that will cost $1.2 billion, according to developers.

UNLV owns the 42-acre site for the stadium and wants to move its football program to a new facility closer to campus.

Las Vegas Review-Journal's Howard Stutz reports that Las Vegas Sands Corp., which is leading the charge for the planned 65,000-seat all-purpose stadium, expects private investors to contribute another $420 million.

Developers suggest the public's contribution could come from extra taxes on taxicabs, rental cars, or hotel rooms, to name a few potential sources.

The Oakland Raiders are candidates to share the stadium, but Las Vegas Sands senior vice president Andy Abboud said last week that they expect to move on with the concept "with or without an NFL team."
