Report: Diamondbacks trying to trade Aaron Hill

Benny Sieu / USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Diamondbacks generated lots of buzz this offseason with a handful of additions, and general manager Dave Stewart now seems focused on cleansing the roster of certain holdovers, as well.

With less than four weeks remaining until pitchers and catchers report for spring training, the Diamondbacks are reportedly trying to trade veteran second baseman Aaron Hill, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. However, with accomplished middle infielders like Howie Kendrick and Ian Desmond still available in free agency, Heyman notes, it may be hard to move the 33-year-old.

Hill's waning production and $12-million salary aren't particularly enticing for potential trade partners, either. Since 2014, Hill owns a .648 OPS (78 OPS+) with 16 home runs and a 6.6 percent walk rate in 249 games, ranking dead last among second baseman with minus-0.8 WAR over that span (min. 800 PA).

In 2015, Hill hit .230/.295/.345 (73 OPS+) in 116 contests while spending considerable time at third base for the first time since his rookie season.

Almost three years removed from his last productive season, Hill's role with the Diamondbacks could be dramatically curtailed in 2016 if they're unable to work out a trade. Despite his struggles at the plate since making his MLB debut in 2013, Chris Owings is a candidate to win the everyday job at second, while former sixth-round pick Jake Lamb is poised to open the year as Arizona's regular third baseman.
