American Rajeev Ram will head to the second round of the Australian Open after South Africa's Kevin Anderson retired in the fourth set of their first-round match.

Down 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-3, 3-0, Anderson, the tournament's No. 11 seed, decided he could not continue, awarding the 93rd-ranked Ram the upset win he was on his way to claiming anyway.

Anderson had been battling a knee injury, according to the New York Times' Christopher Clarey, possibly explaining the early exit.

Ram will move on to face Stephane Robert, who defeated qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
