Ian Desmond will test the free-agent market.
The shortstop has rejected a one-year, $15.8-million qualifying offer from the Washington Nationals, according to James Wagner of the Washington Post.
Desmond said earlier this week that he wants to play for the team that best gives him a chance of winning a World Series.
Washington will receive draft-pick compensation if Desmond signs with another club.
The 30-year-old posted his worst offensive numbers since 2011 for the underachieving Nationals, hitting .233/.290/.384 with 19 home runs and 62 RBIs.
