Oddsmakers: Calder Trophy is Eichel's to lose after McDavid injury

Timothy T. Ludwig / USA TODAY Sports

A devastating injury to Connor McDavid has opened up the Calder Trophy race, and the second overall pick from this year's draft has emerged as the odds-on favorite to be named the NHL's rookie of the year.

Heading into Friday's action, the Edmonton Oilers phenom - who's expected to be out months with a broken clavicle - still leads the rookie scoring race with 12 points.

Despite sitting seven points back with five goals - including a stunner scored Thursday - Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres retains his status as second only to McDavid, while the rest of the field contains other rookies who've impressed early.

Player Odds
Jack Eichel (BUF) 14/5
Artemi Panarin (CHI) 3/1
Max Domi (ARI) 7/2
Nikolaj Ehlers (WPG) 9/2
Dylan Larkin (DET) 5/1
Sam Bennett (CAL) 14/1
Oscar Lindberg (NYR) 14/1
Sam Reinhart (BUF) 22/1
Jake Virtanen (VAN) 35/1
Noah Hanifin (CAR) 50/1

Notable omissions include defenseman Colton Parayko of the St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens goalie Mike Condon.
