The NHL's new overtime format provided another decision Friday in Brooklyn.

Unfortunately for the New York Islanders, it was the Chicago Blackhawks who capitalized in the extra frame. Patrick Kane's attempt to get the puck to Jonathan Toews deflected into the home team's net off defenseman Johnny Boychuk's stick, giving the visitors the 3-2 win.

The goal was scored in a four-on-three situation, as a Marian Hossa breakaway drew a slashing penalty courtesy of Nick Leddy.

The game-winning goal was Kane's second of the night, as he was left wide open next to the Islanders net late in the second period and roofed a Toews pass past an unsuspecting Thomas Greiss.

Kane, who remains the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation around an alleged sexual assault, was named the game's first star.
