Texans' O'Brien non-committal on starting QB after Hoyer replaces Mallett

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

The never ending Houston Texans quarterback saga will continue.

Head coach Bill O'Brien did not name a starting quarterback for Week 6 following Thursday's 27-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Brian Hoyer entered the game late in the first half and played the entire second half despite Ryan Mallett appearing healthy enough to return.

Following the game Mallett told Adam Wexler of KPRC-TV that he had the wind knocked out of him, while Bill O'Brien indicated he thought Mallett had an ankle injury. Mallett confirmed that he tried to re-enter the game but was waived off by his head coach.

O'Brien said the coaches will watch the game film and discuss the decision prior to next week's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hoyer sparked a Texans comeback that fell just short after entering the game, throwing for 312 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 24-of-32 passing.

With the exception of a bad interception to end the game, Hoyer outplayed Mallett, who left briefly following a big hit and was unable to get back on the field while O'Brien rode the hot-hand.

The Texans are mired in a 1-4 season and have not been able to get sustainable quarterback play from either Hoyer or Mallett this season.
