Browns toy with idea of moving Justin Gilbert to wide receiver

The Cleveland Browns are prepared to get creative if that's what it takes to extract value from 2014 first-round pick Justin Gilbert.

The cornerback, selected eighth overall a year ago, has been a big disappointment on defense.

But what about offense?

Head coach Mike Pettine said Thursday the Browns have tried using Gilbert at wide receiver in practice and may continue to use him on offense.

The highly athletic Gilbert "doesn't look out of place" at receiver, Pettine told reporters.

"He's certainly shown the ability when the ball's in his hand he can do something with it," Pettine added.

Offensive coordinator John DeFilippo echoed the sentiments, saying playing Gilbert at wide receiver is "definitely something we'll explore."

The Browns desperately need help at wideout and tried to convert Terrelle Pryor from quarterback to pass-catcher in training camp.

Gilbert probably has the skills necessary to make the (much easier) move from corner to receiver, but it's worrying that the Browns seem willing to give up on their defensive prospect so early in his career.
