Primetime Primer: Legion of Boom looking to regain top form vs. Calvin Johnson

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

Two 2014 playoff teams looking to revive their seasons after undergoing a drastically slow start will meet when the Seattle Seahawks host the Detroit Lions on Monday night.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is on pace to throw the most interceptions during any season of his career, while the team's defense appears listless after Ndamukong Suh's departure. If their trip to CenturyLink Field results in a loss, the Lions may be doomed to fight for the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft along with their divisional rival Chicago Bears if they lose Monday.

After two consecutive Super Bowl appearances, the core of the Seahawks' juggernaut began the season relatively docile, losing their first two games. With Marshawn Lynch listed as a game-time decision due to a hamstring injury, the Seahawks will need to channel every ounce of their home-field advantage Monday to get back in the NFC playoff race.

The Legion of Boom presented with major test vs. Johnson, Tate

Seattle led the league in scoring defense the past three seasons, with its secondary etching its way into history as one of the greatest units of all time. However, the vaunted Legion of Boom appeared pedestrian in the first two weeks and will be tested by Detroit's dynamic duo of Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate.

Kam Chancellor returned from a prolonged holdout in time for the Seahawks' 26-0 victory over the Chicago Bears. Chancellor is the most devastating hitter in the league and he will vacillate from lining up at outside linebacker to a more traditional coverage role. Johnson is an omnipresent danger and Chancellor's combination of speed and size makes him one of the few players who could deter his route in the open field.

Tate was the Seahawks' leading receiver during the team's Super Bowl winning-season but joined the Lions after his former club tried to retain him at a discounted rate. Richard Sherman raved about the opportunity to face his former teammate, and Seattle will likely opt to rotate corners Cary Williams and Tye Smith onto him, while free safety Earl Thomas alleviates the deep threat while sitting in center field.

Squaring off against one of the league's most potent receiving duos, the Legion of Boom is presented with an opportunity to redeem itself as the league's most fearsome defense.

Player to Watch

Darius Slay, CB, Lions

Through his first two seasons, Darius Slay proved to be one of the league's promising talents at cornerback, excelling in his role with the Lions. Slay was selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft and immediately delivered on his promise. However, Slay's poor performance this season may be viewed as a microcosm of the team's complete capitulation, allowing quarterbacks to complete over 83 percent of their passes targeted against him.

The Seahawks may ditch their run-heavy scheme with Marshawn Lynch listed as a game-time decision, and Slay will likely be matched up against Doug Baldwin. In a nationally televised game, Slay could show that he's ready for stardom or completely fade away.
