Manchester City's Mangala ready to battle Otamendi for starting role

Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala isn't too concerned over the battle for a starting role in his club's back four, despite added competition in the form of an old friend, Nicolas Otamendi.

The club signed the Argentine defender from Valencia before the close of the summer transfer window, splashing cash to the tune of £33 million for the 27-year-old. Mangala came to City last season out of FC Porto for £32 million himself, giving City plenty of high-profile choices at centre-back.

With a handful of strong season-opening performances under his belt, Mangala says he's ready to battle Otamendi for the spot beside Vincent Kompany, just as they competed against each other during their time in Portugal.

"I know Nico very well from our two years together at Porto," Mangala told reporters. "(The competition) is normal because City is a great club which is looking to bounce back from last season."

The French international admitted that, while he did not have the best season last year, he feels he has grown enough to challenge for a starting role.

"I have benefited and learned from the difficulties of last season," Mangala explained. "I must be efficient and consistent through the club season, both in the Premier League and in the Champions League and then when I’m with France, I must give assurance to the coach and then the rest is up to him."

For now, Mangala remains a part of Manuel Pellegrini's side, though the transfer of Otamendi had, at first, nearly placed him at Valencia on loan. It was a move Mangala said he didn't want.

"I refused because it would have been a step backwards," Mangala said. "I felt good enough to win my place."
