Blue Jays shuffle rotation, bump Buehrle to Sunday for extra rest

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons tinkered with his rotation Wednesday afternoon to give his most veteran left-hander a little extra rest as the postseason nears.

Originally slated to start Saturday's game against the Baltimore Orioles, Mark Buehrle - the 36-year-old who's on pace to eclipse 200 innings pitched for a 15th consecutive season - will instead pitch Sunday's series finale at Rogers Centre.

David Price, who owns a 2.28 ERA in six starts since being acquired by Toronto ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, will start Saturday in lieu of Buehrle.

If five-time All-Star Buehrle logs 29 more innings this season, he'll join Hall-of-Famers Don Sutton and Gaylord Perry as the only pitchers to toss at least 200 innings for 15 consecutive summers. Through 26 starts this season, Buehrle owns a 3.53 ERA (112 ERA+) with a 2.96 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Heading into Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Indians, the Blue Jays own a 1 1/2-game lead over the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East.
