Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman Arthur Jones will undergo surgery on his injured ankle and could be placed on injured reserve/designated to return, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

And that's a best-case scenario. Season-ending injured reserve is also a possibility.

Jones battled an ankle injury for most of last season and saw several doctors before concluding that surgery was the best course of action. He reportedly has torn ligaments in his ankle and surgery will reveal if there's joint damage.

It's a big blow to the Colts' suspect defense, and it's another big-money free-agent signing by general manager Ryan Grigson that hasn't gone according to plan.

The Colts gave Jones a $33-million deal last offseason under the expectation he would become a key piece of their revamped defensive line. It hasn't panned out.
