Report: Bills debating cutting Matt Cassel

Timothy T. Ludwig / USA TODAY Sports

With Tyrod Taylor winning the Buffalo Bills' starting quarterback job, the team is reportedly debating releasing the player who many expected to win the competition.

The Bills are having internal discussions about cutting Matt Cassel, according to Sal Capaccio of WGR 550.

It's unclear how serious these discussions are. Before teams cut down to their final 53 players, they deliberate on which players (who are not clear-cut starters) they'll keep or let go.

The Bills traded a 2015 fifth-round pick and a seventh-rounder in 2016 to the Minnesota Vikings for Cassel and a 2015 sixth-round pick, so they didn't invest much to get him.

Should Cassel be cut, it would likely lock third-year passer EJ Manuel into the Bills' backup job.
