Pete Carroll: Earl Thomas as ready 'as we can get him' for Week 1

Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas appears to be on track to return in time for the regular-season opener after working his way back from a shoulder injury suffered in last year's playoffs.

Head coach Pete Carroll told reporters Tuesday that Thomas will not play in the club's final preseason game against the Oakland Raiders, but said he's as ready "as we can get him" for Week 1.

Thomas' early season status was put into question after he underwent surgery for a torn labrum following the Super Bowl. The extensive rehab process that followed was expected to sideline the star safety for anywhere from six-to-eight months.

His healthy return to the field becomes all the more significant for the Seahawks' league-best secondary with fellow safety Kam Chancellor still in search of a new contract and staying away from team activities.

Thomas has established himself as one of the league's top defensive players through his first five NFL seasons, earning four trips to the Pro Bowl and three first-team All-Pro honors over that span.
