As expected, Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has been called up to the United States squad for its September friendlies.

The shot-stopper has accumulated more than 100 caps for his country over his career, and asked to be considered for selection again after taking a year off for personal reasons.

DaMarcus Beasley was also due to make a return but aggravated a right calf injury Saturday while playing for Houston Dynamo.

The U.S. faces Peru on Sept. 4 and Brazil on Sept. 8.

The friendlies will prepare the team for a vital Confederations Cup qualifier against Mexico on Oct. 10. Manager Jurgen Klinsmann told reporters he'll have a close eye on how individuals perform to see if they're up for the challenge in California.

The bigger picture is to get some answers for how we put things together for the Mexico game a month from now. Obviously we want to continue to have a good flow of guys from the Gold Cup, but also to bring back guys who are in position to compete for a spot on the roster for Oct. 10. Our message to these guys is simple: prove a point that you want to be at the Rose Bowl.

Jermaine Jones and Matt Besler return to the fold for the first time since February, while Geoff Cameron is back in contention for the first time since the 2014 World Cup.

Toronto FC's Michael Bradley and Seattle Sounders attacker Clint Dempsey will become available for the Brazil game.
