Texans release veteran safety Stevie Brown

Jim O'Connor-US PRESSWIRE / Reuters

The Houston Texans released Stevie Brown on Friday, according to ESPN's Tania Ganguli, parting ways with the veteran safety just months after landing him in free agency.

Brown entered training camp as a presumed starter opposite fellow free-agent addition Rahim Moore, but the club appears comfortable with either Quintin Demps or a younger player stepping into that role.

After spending time with both the Oakland Raiders and Indianapolis Colts over his first two seasons, Brown notched eight interceptions to put together a breakout year with the New York Giants in 2012.

Hitting the free-agent market well in advance of the regular season should give him an opportunity to catch on with another team and compete for playing time in 2015.
