Vikings 'aiming for' rookie Trae Waynes to be Week 1 starter

Despite an uneven start to his pro career, the Minnesota Vikings see cornerback Trae Waynes as a Week 1 starter.

"That's what we're aiming for," defensive coordinator George Edwards said, according to ESPN's Ben Goessling. "That's what we're all working for. But we're just going to take it from week to week. We've still got two more (preseason) games to go, and we'll just keep evaluating him through the process."

Waynes looked overmatched in the Vikings' first two preseason games, but seemed to turn a corner in the third. (By virtue of playing in the Hall of Fame Game, the Vikings are one of two NFL teams to play five preseason games.)

The Vikings sound ready to continue letting Waynes take his lumps in the preseason in hopes he will emerge a better player.

"I think he's gotten better from week to week," Edwards said. "There's no substitute for experience - getting out there, and having to do it under the lights, against good competition week-in and week-out. Doing it out here in practice is one thing, but transferring it to the game is another."
