Dodgers sweep Reds, lose Puig and Gonzalez to injuries

Just when things are beginning to look up, the Los Angeles Dodgers fall victim to the injury bug.

Such is life for the 2015 Dodgers.

Zack Greinke fired seven scoreless innings, Andre Ethier collected three hits, and the Dodgers completed their three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, despite losing Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez to injuries.

Puig's exit is especially worrisome for a club looking to put last week's five-game losing streak behind it.

The Cuban star was pulled from the contest in the ninth inning after legging out an infield single off Reds closer Aroldis Chapman. Puig told reporters after the 1-0 victory that he re-injured the same right hamstring that caused him to miss two starts earlier this month.

He said the soreness was "worse" than what he experienced previously.

"We know what it is," manager Don Mattingly said before the club returned home for a pivotal six games against the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants. "We'll see where it goes after we travel."

Gonzalez, meanwhile, exited after just four innings when he fouled a pitch off his leg. He was diagnosed with a bruised right knee and listed as day to day, though the club expects the slugging first baseman to be ready for Friday's opener against the Cubs. Gonzalez later said there is a "100% chance" he plays on Friday.

Greinke lowered his major league-best ERA to 1.61 and allowed four hits with nine strikeouts to extend the Dodgers' lead in the NL West to three games.

Los Angeles has been snake-bitten by injuries this season as it looks to recover from recent early-playoff exits. The club lost both Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu to season-ending injuries earlier this year, and are currently without starting second baseman Howie Kendrick, who's nursing a hamstring strain.
