Champions League Play-off Results: Valencia advances, Malmo ousts Celtic

Here's a rundown of what took place in Tuesday's second-leg play-off matches, which determined five of the final 10 teams that will reach the 2015-16 Champions League group stage via the play-off route.

Monaco 2, Valencia 1 (Valencia wins 4-3 on aggregate)

Goals

  • Valencia: Alvaro Negredo - 4th minute
  • Monaco: Andrea Raggi - 17th minute
  • Monaco: Elderson - 75th minute

There will be five Spanish clubs in the group stage of the Champions League this season. Valencia – who came into the second leg against Monaco with a comfortable two-goal advantage – got an early (and stunning) chip from Alvaro Negredo, which essentially put the tie out of reach before the French side could even sniff a comeback.

Malmo 2, Celtic 0 (Malmo wins 4-3 on aggregate)

Goals

  • Malmo: Markus Rosenberg - 23rd minute
  • Malmo: Dedryck Boyata (OG) - 54th minute

Celtic manager Ronny Deila will be ruing his side's inability to defend set pieces. The Scottish juggernaut, not lacking in its employment of imposing players who should, in theory, be dominant in the air, conceded three goals from set pieces over the two legs against Malmo, including each of the two markers scored in Tuesday's match at the Swedbank Stadion.

Dinamo Zagreb 4, Skenderbeu 1 (Dinamo Zagreb wins 6-2 on aggregate)

Goals

  • Dinamo Zagreb: El Arabi Hilal Soudani - 9th minute
  • Skenderbeu: Esquerdinha - 10th minute
  • Dinamo Zagreb: Armin Hodzic - 15th minute
  • Dinamo Zagreb: Jeremy Taravel - 55th minute
  • Dinamo Zagreb: El Arabi Hilal Soudani - 80th minute

Albania will have to wait to see one of its club teams reach the group stage of the Champions League. Skenderbeu fought valiantly, but in the end, Dinamo Zagreb proved far superior, with a brace from El Arabi Hilal Soudani more than enough to get the Croatian side back into Europe's premiere club competition for the first time since 2012-13.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2, Rapid Wien 2 (Shakhtar Donetsk wins 3-2 on aggregate)

Goals

  • Rapid Wien: Louis Schaub - 13th minute
  • Rapid Wien: Steffen Hofmann - 22nd minute
  • Shakhtar Donetsk: Olexandr Gladkiy - 27th minute

Rapid Wien kept it close, but in the end, the Ukrainian giant had just too much, and will make yet another appearance in Europe's marquee club competition. The Austrian club will have nightmares of an immaculate late opportunity that fell to Robert Beric, who somehow sent a wide open header from just outside the six-yard box agonizingly wide of the post. An inch to the left, and Shakhtar Donetsk would be watching this season's Champions League from the couch.

Goals

  • FC Basel: Luca Zuffi - 11th minute
  • Maccabi Tel-Aviv: Eran Zahavi - 24th minute

That sound you hear is Maccabi Tel-Aviv supporters erecting a statue of Eran Zahavi. The attacking midfielder scored all three of his club's goals over the two legs against the Swiss giant, including the 96th-minute tally in the first leg that ultimately proved to be the crucial goal in the tie.
