Yankees' Mitchell suffers nasal fracture after being struck by line drive

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

New York Yankees pitcher Bryan Mitchell suffered a small nasal fracture in Monday's game against the Minnesota Twins after he was struck in the head by an Eduardo Nunez line drive in the second.

The right-hander was immediately removed from the game and taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital for a full evaluation and has since been released, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Yankees medical staff are monitoring Mitchell for concussion symptoms.

Mitchell walked off the field under his own power with a towel over his face, which was visibly bleeding. Jack Curry of YES Network tweeted that replays showed the ball striking his nose after hitting his cap. The ball came off of Nunez's bat at 103 miles per hour.

"Really, really scary," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about the incident. "It seems like you heart just drops into your stomach and you're scared for the kid and you see blood coming out. I was really worried, but he has a small hairline fracture in his nose and we're going to monitor him pretty closely the next 24 hours."

The rookie was bumped into the Monday start in place of CC Sabathia, who was pushed back a day.

Mitchell is sporting a 3.86 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 21 innings of work this season.

Nunez was awarded with an RBI single on the play.
