Washington Capitals backup goaltender Justin Peters underwent surgery on his left knee Monday.

The Capitals expect Peters to return to full hockey activities in time for training camp in September.

The 28-year-old netminder appeared in 12 games for the Capitals last season, going 3-6-1 with a 3.25 GAA and a save percentage of .881.

Before joining Washington in 2014, Peters spent five seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes, who selected him 38th overall in 2004.
