Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson suffered a strained MCL during practice on Sunday, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.

Johnson will miss "a few weeks," according to Anderson's report, which means he could be back before the regular season begins.

The Bengals 2009 third-round pick went down in practice and hobbled to a cart before being driven off the field. After talking with team doctors following the on-field exam, head coach Marvin Lewis thought Johnson would be OK.

"We had enough hands on him," Lewis said with a laugh. "The best thing is their exam. They've always been 100 percent with me from wherever it stands on those battlefield exams. They're pretty accurate and I feel pretty good about it."

Typical recovery time for an MCL strain is generally four-to-six weeks. If the injury's more significant, they'll need to make an immediate upgrade at the position, but it doesn't appear to be.

The Bengals finished dead last in sacks in 2014.
