Antonio Gates is facing a four-game suspension after violating the NFL's performance enhancing drug policy, but he still isn't sure what led to his failed test.

Gates spoke to reporters at San Diego Chargers training camp Thursday, indicating he was surprised at both initial the result and that he lost the appeal.

"I'm not really quite sure how it got in my system," Gates explained, according to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego. "I was in shock."

Gates insisted he'll be ready to play when he returns, while expressing confidence that Ladarius Green can step in and produce in his absence:

Surprised or not, the eight-time Pro-Bowler being forced to sit out the first month of the season is a crushing blow to the Chargers offense for games against the Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings, and Cleveland Browns.

Gates has hauled in 788 catches for 10,014 yards and 99 touchdowns over 12 seasons with the Chargers, sitting atop the all-time franchise rankings in all major receiving categories.
