Cowboys' Darren McFadden to start camp on PUP list

Kirby Lee / USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys will be down a running back for the start of training camp.

Darren McFadden has been placed on the physically unable to perform list while he recovers from a hamstring injury. That means Joseph Randle - McFadden's competition for the starting job - will likely handle first-team reps for the time being.

McFadden missed the majority of OTAs due to a strained hamstring, but said in June he was back to 100 percent and felt great. This latest injury is to his other leg, according to David Helman of Dallas Cowboys.com.

Head coach Jason Garrett said he hopes to have McFadden back in a week or so.

Players on the active PUP list can be removed at any point during camp, but if they remain there during the regular season, they must sit out the first six games.
