The Philadelphia Phillies unveiled their latest weapon Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, and he didn't disappoint.

Aaron Nola - the seventh overall pick in the 2014 draft out of LSU - made his highly anticipated major-league debut, tossing six innings of one-run ball while striking out six, but got saddled with the loss in a 1-0 defeat.

"He had great poise and mound presence," Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin said postgame. "I couldn't be happier with this performance."

The right-hander's only blemish - a solo shot off the bat of Rays starting pitcher Nathan Karns - unfortunately overshadowed his first big-league strikeout and his first hit.

"It was pretty awesome to feel the energy of the fans and get to pitch at this level," Nola said. "It was pretty amazing."

The 22-year-old dominated Double-A opposition prior to his promotion, crafting a 7-3 mark with a 1.88 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 12 starts. He then continued to excel at the Triple-A level, going 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA and 33 strikeouts in just under 33 innings.
