Aleksandar Mitrovic is reportedly one step away from moving to St. James' Park.

The Serbian forward is scheduled to undergo a medical at Newcastle United, according to Bryan Swanson of Sky Sports, as the club continues to reassemble following a horrific Premier League season in which relegation was avoided on the final matchday.

Mitrovic, 20, joined R.S.C. Anderlecht in 2013 for a then-club-record fee of £3.5 million and went on to notch 27 goals in all competitions last season, including a last-minute equaliser in the club's 3-3 Champions League draw versus Arsenal.

Earlier in July, newly appointed manager Steve McClaren said: "We've talked a lot about the next three transfer being huge, massive, for us." Newcastle then went on to complete the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum from PSV Eindhoven two days later in what was the club's first signing under McClaren.

Supporters staged a protest in April that was backed by the Newcastle United Supporters Trust after the club's full accounts for the end of the last financial year revealed more than £34 million sitting in the bank. Newcastle only announced profits of £18.7 million, angering supporters and leaving them wondering why the money wasn't used to strengthen their squad.
