The Belgian's previous contract was set to expire in 2018, and his name was bandied about in transfer rumours as various clubs began sniffing around the Eternal City, interested in his services.

Nainggolan, who joined the club from Cagliari - initially on loan - midway through the 2013-14 campaign, established himself as the focal point of the Giallorossi midfield last season, leading Roma to settle their co-ownership deal with Cagliari and sign the mohawk-clad dynamo to a permanent deal.

In a group that includes the likes of Miralem Pjanic and Daniele De Rossi, Nainggolan stood out as the club's driving force behind a second-place finish. His combination of indefatigable energy and attacking quality helped him record five goals and two assists in 35 appearances last season.
