Former Red Wings star Fetisov believes Slava Voynov 'got off light'

Slava Voynov began a 90-day jail sentence Monday after pleading no contest to domestic violence charges, but at least one prominent voice in Russian hockey believes the punishment isn't enough for his crime.

Viacheslav Fetisov - one of the first Russian players to join the NHL - wanted a harsher verdict for Voynov due to the heinous nature of violence against women.

"I think he got off light," the Hall of Famer told TASS news agency in Russia, according to a translation from Hockey VIPs Magazine. "(Voynov) laid hands on a woman and he has to answer for it. And it will be a lesson for everyone. I could never let myself hit a woman in my life and I never will."

Fetisov won a Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings and currently serves in the Russian senate. He is unsure how Voynov's career will be affected by the incident, but he feels this is a crucial moment for the character and maturity of the Los Angeles Kings blue-liner, as well as other players watching the drama unfold.

"I can only assume Voynov will continue playing in the United States, but I don't know his plans," Fetisov said. "He must draw the right conclusions and go through this serious test. He has been under the pressure of public attention and the media for a long time. For others, I'm sure, it will be a didactic moment."

Despite Fetisov's scolding, it appears Voynov will have a job waiting for him in the KHL if the NHL is no longer an option following his jail term. His KHL rights belong to Traktor Chelyabinsk, and general manager Sergei Gomolyako would love to add him to the roster.

"He's a Chelyabinsk hockey player and his rights belong to our club," Gomolyako said. "(Voynov) is a great defenseman and a two-time Stanley Cup winner, how could I not offer him a job?"
