Cubs pitcher Jon Lester gets 1st career hit in 67th at-bat
CHICAGO (AP) Cubs pitcher Jon Lester has singled for his first major league hit after 66 fruitless at-bats - plus five more in the World Series.
Lester came up in the second inning Monday night and hit a low liner that ricocheted off the leg of St. Louis Cardinals right-hander John Lackey, a former teammate with the Boston Red Sox.
The ball caromed away toward shortstop, leaving the Cardinals with no play on an infield single that loaded the bases for Chicago. Lester pointed toward the sky with both index fingers at first base and received a standing ovation from the Wrigley Field crowd.
Fans cheered again when the Cubs put a message on the large video board announcing it was his first career hit.
Coming into the game, Lester was 0 for 30 this season.
On the mound, the left-hander had not allowed a hit through six innings against St. Louis.
