Hamburger SV announced the signing of Emir Spahic from Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, as the 34-year-old centre-back is expected to put pen to paper on a one-year deal upon passing an obligatory medical.

Spahic made 22 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen last season before the club terminated his contract in April, after he was caught headbutting a steward on the touchline in the wake of Leverkusen's DFB-Pokal loss to Bayern Munich.

"We are delighted to welcome such an established defender to our club," Hamburg director of football Peter Knabel said. "With his experience, quality, and presence, Emir will become an important leader for us on the pitch. He will also be able to guide our younger players and point them in the right direction."
