Reds GM 'prepared to go either way' at trade deadline

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty remains non-committal on his team's plans as the non-waiver trade deadline approaches.

"I think we'll see how it plays out. We're prepared to go either way," Jocketty told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. "We're certainly not throwing in the towel. If people are interested in our guys, we'll certainly listen and see if there's something that makes sense to make us better in the long run."

Hampered by injuries to Devin Mesoraco and Zack Cozart, the Reds enter Friday sitting 14.5 games back in the division and 5.5 games back of the wild card.

Though the team remains in striking distance of making a run for one of the two wild card spots, Jocketty could find it more prudent to restock his cupboards in order to help the organization in the long run.

Right-handers Johnny Cueto and Mike Leake are impending free agents and are likely to garner plenty of interest, while closer Aroldis Chapman, outfielders Jay Bruce and Marlon Byrd could also find new homes should Jocketty choose to deal.

"I've had some calls for a while. Nothing out of the ordinary," Jocketty said.

While Jocketty has no shortage of veteran players at his disposal to form a trade with, the executive quashed any notion Thursday that third baseman Todd Frazier would be packaged away.

"No, I wouldn't trade him," Jocketty said. "I think all that talk is coming from the New York media."
