There will be a new man in charge of the Carolina Hurricanes' American Hockey League affiliate.

The team named Mark Morris as head coach of the Charlotte Checkers on Friday.

"Mark is an experienced head coach whose teams never had a losing record in 21 seasons at Clarkson and with Manchester,” Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said in a statement. “He is a proven teacher of the game who has been a part of developing successful NHL players.”

The 57-year-old, Morris, spent last season as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers. He also spent eight seasons with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL where he holds the franchise record for games coached and wins.

The team also announced that Geordie Kinnear will return to the Checks as an assistant coach.
