Mexico's Chicharito Hernandez suffers collarbone fracture, will miss Gold Cup

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Mexico was hoping to use Wednesday's friendly match against Honduras - El Tri's final tune-up before the fast-approaching CONCACAF Gold Cup - to work out the kinks and help under-fire manager Miguel Herrera decipher his best starting lineup for the tournament.

Instead, he now has a massive, baby-faced hole in his squad.

Star striker Javier Hernandez, affectionately known as Chicharito, was forced to leave the match late in the first half with injury, and the club confirmed the worst for the 27-year-old early Thursday morning: he's got a broken collarbone and will be out a minimum of three-to-four weeks, which means he'll miss the Gold Cup.

Mexico's team doctor said:

The fracture of the right collarbone has been confirmed clinically. He's being re-evaluated in hospital to confirm what we observed in a radiological study.

Chicharito will reportedly spend the night in hospital. The game ended in a 0-0 draw.

With Mexico set to open its Gold Cup adventure on July 9 against Cuba, the injury is a massive one, and rules the Manchester United forward out of the competition.
