Report: Jerry Dipoto out as Angels GM amid rift with Scioscia

The power struggle between the Los Angeles Angels' front office and clubhouse appears to be on the verge of a dramatic conclusion.

Multiple reports indicate Jerry Dipoto is no longer the Angels' general manager following renewed friction between the executive and manager Mike Scioscia. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that Dipoto packed up the belongings from his office Tuesday night, fueling speculation the 47-year-old was resigning from his role as GM after parts of four seasons.

From ESPN's Jerry Crasnick:

"He's definitely out," a Major League Baseball source with knowledge of the situation said of Dipoto. Two baseball sources said Dipoto resigned his position Tuesday, although the Angels offered no immediate confirmation. Dipoto did not return a text message seeking comment.

Reports of ongoing friction between Dipoto and Scioscia surfaced Monday. Fox Sports reported Dipoto recently held a meeting with Scioscia and the coaching staff that turned contentious. Dipoto reportedly was displeased that the Angels' staff was not making a better effort to convey scouting information and statistical data to the players that was provided by the front office.

An MLB source told ESPN.com that Dipoto approached owner Arte Moreno with an ultimatum that "backfired."

Meanwhile, Rosenthal's colleague, Jon Morosi, tempered reports Wednesday by noting that Moreno and team president John Carpino were still busy trying to broker a peace deal between Dipoto and Scioscia, according to sources.

Several players, however, were reportedly under the impression Dipoto was no longer the team's GM prior to Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees. A source described the situation to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports as "chaotic," while high-ranking members of the organization were still unclear on Dipoto's status as recently as Wednesday morning.

The Angels, who won their fourth-straight game Tuesday, have yet to publicly comment on Dipoto's status, though MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reports an announcement could come prior to Wednesday's finale against the Yankees.
